Every major cloud storage system faces the same fundamental tension: data must survive disk failures, node failures, and even datacenter outages, but tripling storage costs through replication is economically unsustainable at exabyte scale. Erasure coding resolves this by encoding data with mathematical redundancy that tolerates arbitrary failures while consuming only 1.2–1.5x the original storage. Understanding how this works, from the algebra to the systems engineering, separates engineers who operate storage from those who design it.
The Replication Tax
Three-way replication is conceptually simple: store three copies across three failure domains. Any two can fail, and data survives. But at 200% overhead, an exabyte system wastes two exabytes on redundancy. Erasure coding achieves equivalent or superior durability at 33–50% overhead by exploiting the algebraic structure of finite fields.
Reed-Solomon: The Foundation
Reed-Solomon (RS) coding splits data into k fragments, generates m parity fragments, and guarantees recovery from any m failures among the k+m total fragments. The standard notation is RS(n, k) where n = k + m.

Decoding
When fragments fail, recovery selects any k surviving rows from G, inverts the resulting k×k submatrix, and multiplies by the surviving fragments. The key property: any k×k submatrix of a Cauchy matrix is invertible over GF(2^8), guaranteeing recovery from any m erasures.

RS(14, 10), a common configuration, tolerates 4 simultaneous failures at only 40% overhead. But repair is expensive: reconstructing a single lost fragment requires reading all k=10 surviving fragments across 10 different nodes. At scale, this means recovering a 1 GB fragment requires transferring 10 GB of data across the network. This is the repair bandwidth amplification problem.
Local Reconstruction Codes: Minimizing Repair Cost
Local Reconstruction Codes (LRC), introduced by Microsoft Research in 2012 and deployed in Azure Storage, add local parity fragments that enable single-failure repair by reading from a small subset of fragments rather than all k.
LRC Structure
An LRC(k, l, r) divides k data fragments into l local groups of k/l fragments each. Each group gets its own local parity (computed by XOR within the group), plus r global parities for multi-failure tolerance.

The Durability Trade-off
LRC sacrifices a small amount of failure tolerance compared to pure RS for dramatically better repair efficiency. An RS(16, 12) tolerates any 4 failures. An LRC(12, 2, 2) with 16 total fragments tolerates any 3 failures (some 4-failure patterns are unrecoverable if both failures hit the same local group along with both global parities). In practice, simultaneous failures beyond 3 are vanishingly rare, making LRC's repair speed advantage a net durability win since faster repair reduces the window of vulnerability.

They achieve the information-theoretic lower bound on repair bandwidth: recovering a single fragment of size B requires downloading only B/(k-1) data from each of k+m-1 helpers, totaling B·(k+m-1)/(k-1) bytes. For RS(14, 10), this means ~1.44x the fragment size instead of 10x.
How Clay Codes Work
Clay codes use a coupled-layer construction. Each node stores a fragment that is itself a vector of sub-symbols. During repair, helpers send carefully chosen linear combinations of their sub-symbols rather than full fragments. The coupling between layers ensures that these partial transfers carry sufficient information for exact reconstruction.
The key insight is interference alignment: the information needed for repair is "aligned" into a lower-dimensional subspace at each helper, allowing each helper to transmit less data while collectively providing enough for reconstruction.
Practical Deployment
Ceph implemented Clay codes in the Nautilus release (2019). Benchmarks show 40–60% reduction in repair network traffic compared to RS for equivalent parameters. The trade-off: encoding and decoding are computationally more expensive (approximately 2–3x CPU cost), making Clay codes most beneficial when network bandwidth is the bottleneck, which it typically is in cross-rack or cross-datacenter repairs.

Placement and Failure Domain Awareness
Erasure coding effectiveness depends critically on fragment placement. Placing all fragments on one rack means a single top-of-rack switch failure loses everything. The constraint: spread fragments across at least m+1 failure domains (racks, availability zones, or regions).
This creates a tension with repair locality. Cross-rack repair is 10–100x slower than intra-rack. LRC's local groups should ideally be rack-aligned so single-disk repairs stay intra-rack, while global parities span racks for correlated failure protection.
When Erasure Coding Loses
Erasure coding is not universally superior to replication:
Latency-sensitive reads: Reading a replicated object hits one node. Reading an erasure-coded object in degraded mode requires k network round-trips for reconstruction.
Small objects: The encoding overhead (CPU, metadata) dominates for objects under 1 MB. Most systems replicate small objects and erasure-code large ones (the "tiered" approach).
Write-heavy workloads: Partial updates to erasure-coded data require read-modify-write of the affected parity fragments. Append-only or immutable data is ideal.
Tail latency: In a k=10 system, a single slow node stalls the entire read. Hedged reads (sending k+1 or k+2 requests) mitigate this but increase load.
The Frontier: Convertible Codes
The latest research direction (Maturana and Rashmi, 2020–2025) explores convertible codes that can change parameters (k, m) without re-encoding all data. As data ages and access patterns change, a system might convert from RS(6, 3) (high durability, higher overhead) to RS(10, 2) (lower durability, lower overhead) by combining fragments from multiple objects, without reading and re-encoding the original data. This enables storage systems to implement lifecycle policies that continuously optimize the cost-durability trade-off as data cools.
